Many people experiencing pain around the ear, jaw or muscles on the side of the face, may be suffering from TMD or temporomandibular disorder. Sometimes people mistakenly use the term TMJ to refer to temporomandibular disorders when in fact, TMJ is simply an abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint or jaw joint.
What is TMD?
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a complex set of conditions characterized by pain and dysfunction of the TMJ and/or the muscles surrounding it. TMD can be difficult to diagnose as there are many symptoms and the condition does not affect all people the same.
What Causes TMD?
Just like with other joints in the body, the TMJ can be affected by orthopedic problems including inflammation, muscle soreness, strained tendons & ligaments and disk problems. Genetics, gender and physical & psychological stress can also be factors.
Symptoms of TMD Disorder
The most common symptoms of TMD include:
- Pain around the ear, jaw or muscles on the sides of the face
- Clicking or popping sound coming from the TMJ
- Chronic headaches
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Episodes of jaw locking when closed or open
- Clenching or grinding of the teeth
How We Can Help
If you are experiencing jaw pain or have difficulty opening or closing your jaw, we can do a thorough examination to find the source of the problem area. After your examination, we will devise a treatment strategy for managing your symptoms and discomfort. Often times, applying ice and/or moist heat to the affected area can provide relief. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants can also help as can gentle stretching exercises in the case of muscle spasms.
For more serious cases of TMD, more complex forms of treatment may be necessary which may include:
- Dental restorations like bridgework
- Cortisone injections
- Lavage (flushing) of the joint
- It is rare for major surgery to be necessary for the treatment of TMD.
